The Project: Giving a Small Town a Bigger Voice
Uniondale is a small rural town in the Little Karoo with a rich history, spectacular scenery, and a close-knit community. Like many small towns, it has wonderful businesses, attractions, and events, but no single online destination that truly showcased everything the town has to offer.
As a personal community initiative, I designed and developed My Uniondale entirely free of charge. My goal was simple: create a central digital hub that promotes the town, supports local businesses, encourages tourism, and gives residents a platform to share what's happening in the community.
The Strategy: Building a Community Platform
Rather than creating a traditional tourism website, I developed a living platform that grows with the town. The website combines local business promotion, community news, events, visitor information, and regular content updates into one easy-to-navigate destination.
Supporting Local Business: Every local business, restaurant, accommodation provider and service has the opportunity to gain valuable online exposure, helping both residents and visitors discover what Uniondale has to offer.
Promoting Tourism: The site showcases Uniondale's attractions, history, scenic drives, outdoor activities, accommodation, and annual events, encouraging travellers to stay longer and experience everything the region has to offer.
Community First: Local sporting events, charity initiatives, community projects, school activities, markets and social gatherings all have a home on the platform, helping strengthen community engagement and keeping residents informed.
The Technical Backbone: More Than Just a Website
A community website needs to remain active to be valuable. My role extends well beyond the initial design and development.
Ongoing Content Management: I continuously add new businesses, publish community news, update events, and maintain fresh content so the website remains relevant throughout the year.
Responsive Design: The site has been designed to provide an excellent experience whether visitors are browsing on a desktop computer, tablet, or mobile phone—important for both tourists on the road and local residents.
Reliable Hosting & Maintenance: I manage the hosting, security, backups, software updates, and ongoing technical support, ensuring the platform remains fast, secure, and available whenever people need it.
The Result
What began as a voluntary project has become a valuable digital resource for Uniondale. My Uniondale serves as the town's online noticeboard, tourism guide, business directory, and community hub, helping connect residents, attract visitors, and support the local economy.
Most importantly, it demonstrates how professional web development can make a meaningful difference to a small rural community. By donating my time and expertise, I've helped create a platform that promotes Uniondale long after visitors have left and gives local businesses and organisations a place to be discovered.
